Successful Living with Chronic Conditions Workshop

Jones Regional Medical Center will begin offering two six-week long chronic disease workshops facilitated by Mary Ann Hindman, social services director at Jones Regional, Sarah Rickels, RN, Pam Williams, respiratory therapist, and Mary Anne Willms, activities coordinator. The first session will be from 9-11:30 a.m. every Wednesday beginning on April 14 and the second session will be from 1-3:30 p.m. every Thursday beginning on April 15. The workshops will be held in the hospital cafeteria.

The cost for the workshop is $20 per individual, or $30 per couple, for the six-week course. Each participant will receive a copy of the book, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” and a relaxation tape. Those who should consider participating in this workshop are those with chronic long-term conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, asthma, lung disease, emphysema, stroke, Parkinson’s, diabetes, cancer and other conditions. The workshop is also for a friend, caregiver or relative who would benefit from the problem-solving skills related to managing a chronic condition.

Workshop participants will explore a range of topics related to chronic conditions and successful living including managing symptoms, better communication with doctors, dietitian or nurses, reducing frustration, fighting fatigue, making daily tasks easier, reducing stress and anxiety and more.

Hindman says, “The goals of the classes are to improve quality of life for those with chronic illnesses and their caregivers by learning self management skills.”

To learn more about the workshop or to pre-register today, please call Mary Ann Hindman at Jones Regional Medical Center at 319-462-6135 extension 6318.

Sean Williams
Outpatient Services & Procedures
"There's something about that one-on-one here. Even as an outpatient, they make a point to get to know you the minute you walk in the door. It's small enough here that you know them all by name, yet they're all very professional. You can tell they genuinely want to help you. They have really good communication. They make you feel so relaxed and comfortable that you can talk to them about your pain and not be embarrassed. If you can't do that with your caregiver then you're not going to get anywhere."
