Becoming an Ambulance Volunteer
Purpose
To explain the process on how to become a volunteer with the Anamosa Area Ambulance Service. Also, to establish guidelines for every applicant to the service, so each individual is treated fairly and equally.
Policy
- A request is made to the supervisor for an application for membership to the Anamosa Area Ambulance.
- The completed application will be brought forth to the ambulance membership at the next ambulance meeting. Each member present will be allowed to review the application. Any discussion regarding the applicant will remain confidential between members, medical director, and the administrator.
- The application will either be:
- Accepted
- Denied
- Tabled until the following meeting
These decisions will be made by open vote of all crew members present at that meeting.
- All applications accepted by the crew members will be processed as follows:
- Personal and/or work references will be checked.
- The applicant will be interviewed by the supervisor and/or the medical director.
- The medical director will have final approval on all applications.
- The applicant will be notified by telephone by the supervisor within two (2) weeks from the crew meeting (unless there is a problem obtaining reference checks) if he or she is accepted.
- The applicant will be notified via letter from the supervisor within two (2) weeks from the crew meeting if they have not been accepted.
- The accepted applicant will be expected to follow all policies and procedures set forth by the Anamosa Area Ambulance Service.

- Valid certification as a First Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic by appropriate state agency.
- Valid Iowa drivers license for volunteer personnel, or valid Iowa chauffeur's license for paid personnel.

Volunteer Hours
Purpose
To establish guidelines for amount of hours to be worked by volunteers.
GOAL
By maintaining a minimum number of hours, each volunteer remains actively involved with the service. This involvement helps volunteers to maintain their knowledge in all aspects of this service from location of supplies and equipment within the ambulance to patient care.
Policy
- Once accepted on the Anamosa Area Ambulance Service, volunteers will be expected to volunteer a minimum of 36 hours per month.
- Any hours less than 36 per month will be with the approval of the supervisor and medical director.
- Hours are preferred in twelve (12) hour shifts (day shift: 0600-1800, night shift: 1800- 0600), however, shorter shifts will be accommodated with supervisory discretion.
- Any volunteer unable to provide the appropriate hours without approval by the supervisor or medical director will be given a verbal warning by the supervisor. If a second month goes by without appropriate hours, a written warning will be issued to the volunteer. If a third month goes by without the appropriate amount of hours, the volunteer will be contacted via letter signed by the supervisor and medical director to return all equipment (pager or radio, shirt, and any other equipment that may have been borrowed from the service) and his or her name will be removed from the roster.
